• Friendships are very important in every person’s life. Friends are the family we get to choose, so they are usually the first ones we turn to when we face a problem in life and the ones we want to share our happiness with. They are our greatest supporters, and the source of love, compassion, respect, and fun. However, sometimes, our friends are more of a toxic than an enjoyable company, and such people can easily suck the happiness out of you. According to Florence Isaacs, author of Toxic Friends/True Friends, toxic friends are demanding, unreliable, and stress you out. These friendships are unsatisfying, unsupportive, draining, and unrewarding. Here are 5 types of friends you should drift away from: 1. The FAKE ONE Stay away from fake people, those that compliment you, but keep saying bad things behind your back. These people are never there when you need them, and appear only when they need something from you. 2. The COMPLAINER It is harmless if your friend likes to vent once in a while, but chronic complainers bring constant negative energy into your life that can kill you. Complainers are never satisfied with their life, claiming everything bad happens to them only. They are highly toxic and their world of misery can easily absorb you if you are not careful. 3. The CONSTANT DOUBTER Doubters are jealous of you, always criticize you, and love to see you fail. In this way, they feel powerful and strong. 4. The SHOWOFF These people are annoying, as they use every chance they get to brag about their perfect job, perfect partners, and perfect life, hinting that you are nowhere close to them. 5. The NAYSAYER These people are constantly negative, never support you, and do not believe in you. They belittle your goals, destroy your...
  • In 1994, black metal was still shrouded in mystery for your average listener of heavy music. While the year marked the release of many of the genre’s landmark albums — Emperor’s In The Nightside Eclipse, Darkthrone’s Transilvanian Hunger, and Mayhem’s sonic tombstone De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, to name a few — the ghostly riffs, lo-fi production, and esoteric paganism of the scene left many potential listeners scratching their heads. This obviously didn’t phase the artists involved, as black metal’s central tenets had always included hostility and exclusivity, but it meant that for young metalheads looking for a way to access this lofty new genre, there were few if any points of entry. One album helped change that — a debut by a Suffolk band named Cradle Of Filth, titled The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh. Using a mix of gothic horror, synth-driven atmosphere, and catchy, kinetic metal, Principle Of Evil unwittingly ushered in a new wave of black metal that would make the genre a vital and thriving part of the metal world at large. The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh brought a hard-hitting sense of old-school song structure to black metal. While many second-wave black metal bands were known for their lumbering riffs and sprawling experimentation, Cradle Of Filth’s music was all about momentum. The guitar grind and drum gallop on songs like The Black Goddess Rises and Summer Dying Fast were more akin to thrash and death metal than the airy, misanthropic tracks made by the band’s Scandinavian counterparts. Dani Filth’s vocals are also significantly more monstrous and accessible than the grunts and wails that came before them. The album didn’t sound as though it was made by unreachable heathens immersed in a Christian hell, it sounded like it was made metal fans who loved vampires. That, though, might be Principle Of Evil’s more important contribution to...

  • In nothing short of a jackpot for the Uttar Pradesh government, geologists have discovered massive gold deposits in Sonbhadra district of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The discovery comes after two decades of search by the Geological Survey of India and the Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Geology and Mining. As per the UP state GSI officials, there are two goldmines with around 3,500 tonnes of gold ore in the Naxal-affected Sonbhadra district. This is around five times the current gold reserves of the country which stands at around 626 tonne. According to District Mining Officer KK Rai, the government is thinking of putting these deposits on lease for mining. The GSI had first said in 2005 that there were gold deposits present in Sonbhadra. The claim that goldmines are present beneath the mountains in the Naxal-hit district of Uttar Pradesh were confirmed in 2012. As per officials, a seven-member team has been set up for survey and soon auction of the blocks will begin. According to media reports, the goldmines are situated in Hardi village and Sonpahadi in Mahuli village of Dudhi Tehsil in the district. Rai said that while 2943.25 tonne gold deposits are located in Sonpahadi, around 650 tonnes are in Hardi. Rai said that the gold blocks will be auctioned online after the completion of geo-tagging process by the team. The team has been asked to submit a report to the GSI’s Lucknow office by February 22. Sonbhadra is one of 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh and also one of the backward districts in the country. It lies in the southern part of the state and shares borders with Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. As per reports, officials are also exploring the possibility of rare minerals like uranium being present in the area. Following the discovery, the exploration...

  • Sometimes when I’m with my husband, I imagine the women that might come after me, the women I have dubbed the after-women. My husband has told me that one woman he dated got him to adopt a skincare regimen. Another he got a restraining order against. Another got him to try role-playing. Another he calls “Satan.” I have wondered about myself and our relationship and what little thing that would become to describe me to the after-women. My husband thinks this is ridiculous. “Are you just expecting us to divorce?” he asked me recently. “No!” I said. Because that’s true. I actually believe strongly that this is my forever someone and I will be with him for a long long while (read: when they pry my cold dead fingers off of him). So why do I imagine these after-women when I don’t believe there will ever be any? Because contemplating the potential end of my relationship relates to how contemplating the end of my life can help me live more choicefully. Regular contemplation of death can lead to a deep experience of joy as old attachments and negative habits are released. In Bhutan, people contemplate death five times a day as part of their Buddhist tradition, and instead of being deeply depressed and suicidal, they are citizens of The World’s Happiest Country. By focusing on their own mortality, they are acutely aware of the scarcity of their time on this planet and therefore make choices based on finding peace, meaning, and joy in life. Mark Manson addresses this same concept in his book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: “Death scares us. And because it scares us, we avoid thinking about it, sometimes even acknowledging it, even when it’s happening to someone close to us. Yet, in a...
  • This is the first time I am admitting it: I was bullied in school. I was thirteen years old at the time, and it went on for the one year that I lived in Dorm 11. I never acknowledged it because I felt bullying was too small a misfortune to complain about. But now when I think back to it, I can remember exactly how the dormitory looked. I remember the view from the windows, the corridor in front of my dorm. I remember the faces of the other kids and I remember my face—vulnerable, confused, and lost. It was the same year that I started showing symptoms of OCD. Things just went downhill from there… I guess I got lucky because at one point, things started to slowly get better. At twenty-nine, my life isn’t perfect, but I’m happier than I ever thought I would be. All the advice that I’ve received throughout the years and my life experiences come down to three simple steps. If you feel unhappy about your situation, like I once did, perhaps these steps will be helpful for you too. Step 1: The Starting Point The Starting Point almost never gets covered in the self-help community. I guess it’s a secret, and so I’ll whisper it: Life is hard.  Fresh out of school, I finally started my journey toward a better life. (My goals were very modest: I wanted to have my OCD under control, better social skills, and a romantic partner.) At the time I was deeply influenced by books that promoted extreme positivity. I’m thankful for those books because back then I wasn’t ready for the lesson of Life is hard. They gave me hope where I had none. But those books also distorted my view of reality. They led me to...
  • A bill, which is on the verge of endorsement by the lower house of parliament, may pave the way for the government to shut down social media sites at any time and under any pretext, according to experts.  The Information Technology Bill, which was approved by a parliamentary committee last month and is awaiting endorsement by the House has proposed that the government can ban the social media sites that are not registered with the Nepali authorities. Section 91 of the bill has provisioned that all domestic and foreign social media companies operating in Nepal should get registered in Nepal within a period specified by the government. “All social media companies which are operating in the country prior to the commencement of this law should be registered at the (Information and Technology) department within a given period,” reads Section 91 (2) of the bill.  Subsequent section of the bill further reads that the “government shall ban the use of social media which is not registered in the country.” Stakeholders fear that the provision of the bill could pave the way for the government to shut down social networking sites in the country under any pretext and this will infringe upon the freedom of expression. “[Foreign] Social media companies will indeed come to register with us, because they have been doing business here. We have not imagined that they would not come,” said Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gokul Baskota.  Once the bill becomes a law, the government may ask social media companies including Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Viber, Whatsapp, Instagram and Tiktok among others to register themselves with the Information Technology Department.  But stakeholders say top social media companies are unlikely to register in Nepal given the small size of the market here. Asked what the government would do if...

  • A coffee break in the United States and elsewhere is a short mid-morning rest period granted to employees in business and industry. An afternoon coffee break, or afternoon tea, often occurs as well. The coffee break originated in the late 19th century in Stoughton, Wisconsin, with the wives of Norwegian immigrants. The city celebrates this every year with the Stoughton Coffee Break Festival. In 1951, Time noted that “Since the war, the coffee break has been written into union contracts” The term subsequently became popular through a Pan-American Coffee Bureau ad campaign of 1952 which urged consumers, “Give yourself a Coffee-Break – and Get What Coffee Gives to You” John B. Watson, a behavioral psychologist who worked with Maxwell House later in his career, helped to popularize coffee breaks within the American culture. Coffee breaks usually last from 10 to 20 minutes and frequently occur at the end of the first third of the work shift. In some companies and some civil service, the coffee break may be observed formally at a set hour. In some places, a cart with hot and cold beverages and cakes, breads and pastries arrives at the same time morning and afternoon, an employer may contract with an outside caterer for daily service, or coffee breaks may take place away from the actual work-area in a designated cafeteria or tea room. More generally, the phrase “coffee break” has also come to denote any break from work. Coffee was initially used for spiritual reasons. At least 1,100 years ago, traders brought coffee across the Red Sea. At first, the Arabians made wine from the pulp of the fermented coffee berries. This beverage was known as qishr (kisher in modern usage) and was used during religious ceremonies. Coffee drinking was prohibited by jurists and scholars meeting in Mecca...
